I do five about things professionally, or semi-professionally:

I Practice Law

As a lawyer, my specialty is representing indigent death row inmates in the United States.  I don't really do this for the money, as it doesn't bring in very much.

I Teach Law

I teach the class on Anglo-American Common Law at the University of Düsseldorf.  This class gives German students a broad overview of the common-law legal system, concentrating on the areas of torts, contracts, constitutional law, civil procedure, and conflict of laws.  The class is taught in English using the Socratic question-and-answer method.  This is unusual for Germany, where most law school classes are straight lectures.  I have also taught seminars on Comparative Constitutional Law and Comparative Private Law.

I Write Scholarly Articles

I have published several articles and essays in the area of criminal procedure and constitutional law.  Please feel free to visit my CV if you'd like to know what they are.  I am now working on a few pieces that address comparative criminal law and procedure: that is, comparing the way in which the United States and other countries think about and go about defining what is illegal, catching and prosecuting criminals, and sentencing them.  I've also done some work in the area of comparative law, since I speak German.  My most recent article is Preventive Detention in Comparative Perspective, which will shortly be published in the Annual of German and European Law.

I Write Essays

I also write things non-lawyers might be interested to read.  For instance, I run a blog called German Joys.  I have also written things on what it's like to be a lawyer for death row inmates.

I Translate

I speak German, and have received a 5 out of 5 (maximum possible score) on the TestDAF (Test of German as a foreign language).  I have done some legal translation work, and more general translation, from German into English.
